  1. MAKING GENERALIZATIONS

  2. MAKING GENERALIZATIONS • A generalization is a broad statement that tells about something in general. • In making a generalization, you combine evidence from a text with what you already know. • When making generalizations, it is very important not to use stereotypes or biased information. • Generalizations are different from stereotypes, because they are based on factual information and real-life experience.

  3. MAKING GENERALIZATIONS • To make a generalization about a text, ask yourself these questions: • What is the conflict or problem? • Who wins the conflict, or how is it resolved? • What have the characters learned by the end of the story? • What message about life does the work reveal? • How does the work relate to your own experience or knowledge about human nature?

  4. MAKING GENERALIZATIONS • Examples of generalization: • Savvies are difficult to control. • The original Grimm’s fairy tales were full of violence and blood. • Sailing to an island to find treasure is not necessarily a fun adventure. • Soldiers in the Revolutionary War suffered from lack of food and poor shelter during the winter.
