My cousins come with us to the beach during the summer. My best friend went to the beach last summer. Our neighbors are going to the beach this summer. GENERALIZATION People always go to the beach in the summertime.

  7. Generalizations • A general rule drawn from looking at specific facts and figuring out what they have in common SPECIFIC DETAILS The pumpkin pie my mom made last week was too sweet. The cherry pie I ate last Christmas was very sweet. GENERALIZATION All pie is too sweet.

  8. A Generalizations is two parts Specific Details + What they have in Common (their similarities) = An Opinion Rule which is called a Generalization

  9. Generalizations must be based on facts. But – they do not have to be true!

  10. Generalizations • Generalizations can be valid or invalid. (true or false) • If a generalization is valid, it is well supported by facts, experience and logic. • If a generalization is invalid, it is not supported by all the facts. Experience and logic tell us it cannot be true.
