  7. London 2012 What will it do? Read your textbook on page 217-218 about the London 2012. Draw a table with 3 columns (one for the individual, the country, the government) and put in the key points from this case study.

Why Bid? • International Recognition • Economic Investment in infrastructure, tourism and attractive conference venues. • Other cities in the country gain through training camps. • ‘Feel good’ factor. • Boost for participation figures – health. • Social integration and inclusion • Employment. • A legacy of facilities that can be used once the games are over.

  9. Task The Olympics and the Football World Cup are the top World Games. What are the similarities and differences? Discuss.

  10. Exam Questions • Give six characteristics of the Olympic Games as an example of a World Game. (3) • Give three reasons why a city would bid to host the Olympic Games and three examples of how participating in a World Game can have an impact on an athlete. (6)

  11. Homework • Define the term ‘Sustainable Development’ in your own words. • Check out the London 2012 Olympic website and write down something interesting to bring to next lesson. • Answer the two exam questions.
