  1. Quotation Marks English 9B

  2. Quotation Marks: what they do • Indicate a speaker’s exact words • Indicate a quotation within a quotation • Punctuate the title of: • a song • a poem • a short story • an article • a chapter in a book • a T.V. episode

  3. Examples of quotation marks in use Indicate a speaker’s exact words. Izzy remarked, “I have lost my appetite.” Indicate a quotation within a quotation. Mark asked, “Did you hear Helen say ‘I am tired’?” Indicate exact words from a quoted source. In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet says, “my only love sprung from my only hate” (1.5.138).

  4. Examples of quotation marks in use Punctuate the title of a song. My favorite song is “The Taste of Ink” by The Used. Punctuate the title of a poem. Did you read “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings?” Punctuate the title of a short story. Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” is surprising.

  5. Examples of quotation marks in use Punctuate the title of an article. “Kilpatrick In Court” was a very informative article. Punctuate the title of a chapter in a book. The first chapter of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is called “The Boy Who Lived.” Punctuate the title of a T.V. episode. The South Park episode “Pip” is based off the book Great Expectations.

  6. Additional rules to be aware of • Place periods and commas before quotation marks. Matt said, “I want more ice cream.” • If a question mark or exclamation point punctuations the quotation, the mark belongs inside the quotation marks. His sister asked, “May I go with you tonight?” • If a question mark or exclamation point punctuations the main sentence, place it outside the quotation marks. Was it Romeo who said, “I am fortune’s fool”?
