“Quotation Marks”. Quotation marks are special punctuation marks that point out the exact words spoken by a character or person. They also set off material that comes from another source, like a quote from a book. “ These are called open quotes. .” These are called closed quotes.

  2. Quotation marks are special punctuation marks that point out the exact words spoken by a character or person. They also set off materialthat comes from another source, like a quote from a book.

  3. “ These are called open quotes. .” These are called closed quotes.

  4. In the United States, periods and commas go inside the quotation marks. “I love the Beatles,” said Mrs. Paul. Mr. Pekurney replied, “John Denver is amazing.”

  5. When using quotation marks, the person who said the quote must be mentioned. This is called the attributive tag, or just tag for short. “It is so cold,” Mrs. Clark commented.

  6. Commas are used to separate the quote from the rest of the sentence. At the end of the class the professor remarked, “How attentive you have been today!” “There is a problem,” the head caretaker agrees, “with the storage of garbage between pickups.” “You have ice cream on your nose,” my friend snickered.

  7. Examples of “Quotation Marks” “Ampersands are exciting,” Mrs. McGaughy gushed. Mr. Turner explained, “Colons are my favorite punctuation.” “Quotation marks are cool,” said Mrs. Fallis.

  8. Ready to Practice? Take a short comic and look at the talk bubbles. The words that are in the thought bubbles are the dialogue. Now, on a piece of notebook paper, write the comic strip dialogue using quotation marks correctly. Make sure to correctly use commas with the quotation marks. Also, include tags for the characters.
