Quotation Marks • Use in reports to include exact words from a resource (books, magazines, etc.). • Thomas Edison declared, “Genius is ten percent inspiration and ninety percent perspiration.” OR • Thomas Edison declared that genius was, “ten percent inspiration and ninety percent perspiration.”

  3. Quotation Marks continued… • Use in stories in conversations between characters in your story. • Lynn said, “Today is Pete’s birthday.” • She added, “We should give him a party.”

  4. Direct Quotations (direct quotes) • “Dinosaurs died out millions of years ago,” Mr. Chin explained. • He added, “They haven’t completely disappeared, however.” • “In some places,” he stated, “their bones remain.”
