  2. Welcome to The Odyssey! • About Our Trip… We are about to join Odysseus on his fateful trip across the Aegean Sea to return to his wife, Penelope and son, Telemachus. • Let’s find out what challenges and temptations Odysseus, and all of us, will endure.

Poseidon • Poseidon was the god of the sea • His son was the Cyclops Polyphemus, who Odysseus and his men blinded in his cave on the island of Cyclopses • Because of Poseidon’s grudge against Odysseus he is the reason for Odysseus’ detention. • He vows in vengeance of his son, that Odysseus will never make it home or if so, only after great struggle and losing all of his shipmates.   8. Circe On the Web! Circe was the witch daughter of the sun god, Helios She could turn men into animals and was an expert with magical herbs She turned Odysseus’ men into pigs However, she could not do so to Odysseus, as Hermes had educated him on how to evade her spell They become friends and she helps them on their way. Circe

Calypso • Calypso was a beautiful goddess who lived on the island of Ogygia. • She fell in love with Odysseus and kept him on her island in lustful embrace for seven years. • She wanted Odysseus to become her immortal lover. • However, thanks to Athena’s intercession and Hermes’ command, Calypso let him go. The Phaeacians The Phaeacians were a seafaring people Odysseus arrives there from Calypso’s island and is discovered by the princess Nausicaa It is to these xenophobic people that Odysseus recounts his troubles returning home They give him a ship and send him home to Ithaca The Phaeacians on the Web

Polyphemus the Cyclops • In order to escape the Cyclops’ cave, Odysseus and his men get Polyphemus drunk on wine and then drive a flaming spike into his eye • The men then hide under the sheep as Polyphemus feels them before exiting in the morning • Odysseus hurls insults at Polyphemus as they escape. • Poseidon, Polyphemus’ daddy, is not happy. Odysseus will pay Polyphemus on the Web!

The Lotus Eaters • Odysseus and his men were driven by a storm to the land of the lotus eaters • He sent men to discover what sort of people lived there • They were met by the lotus eaters who fed them lotus plant • All who ate of the plant succumbed to apathy and mindless pleasure-seeking • Odysseus forced his drugged men back to the boat amid their sobbing, escaping the temptation of sensual apathy Lotus Eaters on the Web!

Aeolus • Aeolus was the god of the wind • He received Odysseus and gave him the adverse winds in a bag to aide him in his return to Ithaca. • Within sight of Ithaca, his men opened the bag while Odysseus slept, releasing the winds and blowing them off-course, thus starting the trials that Poseidon had prophesied.   14. Land of The Dead Hades on the Web The witch Circe sends Odysseus to the land of the dead. It is located at the far edge of the world. There, he meets heroes such as Achilles and Ajax, and also his own mother.

  15. The Sirens • The sirens were enchanting bird women whose beautiful songs lured men to wreck their ships on the rocks. • Odysseus commanded his men to plug their ears with beeswax and tie him to the mast to avoid the temptation of their voices. • When passing by, he begged they untie him and head toward their voices.
