  1. Acid Staining

  2. Acid Staining • Reactive stains • Natural colors • Permanent • UV stable • Variegated color Jade Turquoise Coffee Carmel Mahogany Ebony Mission Brown Amber

  3. Acid Staining • How it works • As concrete cures it produces calcium hydroxide (free lime) • Metallic particles suspended in a hydrochloric solution react • with the calcium hydroxide to produce an oxide color on contact • Considerations • Concrete must be fully cure • Must neutralize • Surface should be sealed • Jade & Turquoise may not be used exterior • Color will be variegated and uneven

  4. Acid Staining • Preparation • Slab should be fully cured recommend 28 days • Slab should not have sealer or curing compounds used • Floor should be thoroughly cleaned or sanded lightly • MVER should be considered for interior floors • A calcium chloride test may be used or a relative humidity test • Plastic masking should be used to protect walls and other areas • Saw cuts may also be as separations • Samples should always be made in advance

  5. Acid Staining • Application • Tools should include • Sprayers • Stiff acid brushes • Assorted chip brushes • Plastic containers • Water • Sponges • TSP or baking soda • Shop-vac w/ squeegee • Safety equipment • Rubber gloves

  6. Acid Staining • Application • after masking the area is sanded lightly • an overlay or a dry surface may be pre-wetted • to prevent spotting

  7. Acid Staining Application after pre-wetting the slab the acid stain may be applied with a sprayer and brushed with a stiff acid brush

  8. Acid Staining Application continue to agitate the material dispersing evenly over the entire area

  9. Acid Staining Application after application allow the stain to react until color has developed This time will vary from 2 – 4 hours depending on the surface applied to

  10. Acid Staining Application After the proper burn time the area must be rinsed and neutralized with TSP This must be done before the floor can be sealed, allow 24 – 48 hours of drying time before applying sealer
