Care Farming Scotland Support growth of care farming in Scotland, through: • Promoting awareness of care farming • Facilitating links between interested service providers & land managers • Seeking to influence policy
Progress and plans • First met June 2008 at Royal Highland Show • Steering Group convened for first time in August 2008 • Members: land-based sector, practitioners, health, social services • Launch May 2009 • Fully constituted and a Registered Charity by August 2010 • AGM Sept 2010, elect Board, continue activities Care Farming Scotland Steering Group
New opportunities for farmers • Care farming brings opportunities to farming families who wish to diversify • Range of farms – from 9 acres to 450 acres • E.g.s. Farm to Work; Happy Hens; Cyrenians; Clachbeg Croft etc
A range of care farms in Scotland • Addressing health and wellbeing, through providing a supportive working environment for people with social, health and economic needs • Building confidence, capacity, self-worth, life-skills and employability
The rural sector contributing to health • Care farming clearly links the land-based sector with wellbeing and health • Evidence shows care farming has health and other benefits • More research needed to create a better understanding of these benefits
CFS – next steps • PROCESS: • AGM, election of Board and Chairman • Appointment of a part-time project coordinator • ACTIONS: • Networking with statutory agencies to understand better the procurement of care, and what’s possible through care farming • Providing support for care farmers to network with one another • Continue to network and collaborate with others e.g. Trellis, FC Trellis, City Farms etc
