  2. Subordinate and main clauses • If sentences are made up of a main clause and a subordinate clause. • The main clause can make sense on its own. • The subordinate clause does not make sense on its own.

  3. You can go to the shops if you are good. • Can you spot the main clause? • If the subordinate clause is at the start of the sentence, we use a comma after the last word. • If you are good, you can go to the shops. • What has happened to the sentence above?

  4. Make your own if sentences • You can have a pudding if you finish your main course. • You will get a good job if you work well at school. • Remember to eat a balanced diet if you want to be healthy. • Come to Alton Towers if you are bored! • Visit our website if you need more information.

  5. Over to you! • Now make up your own sentence with if in the middle of the sentence. • Now move if to the beginning of the sentence and see what happens. • Remember to only use a comma if you start the sentence with ‘if’.
