  2. Advantages of the Turbocor centrifugal compressor The Turbocor compressor utilizes a two stage, direct drive, hermetic centrifugal design. Centrifugal compressors offer some very significant advantages as compared to positive displacement compressors (such as reciprocating, scroll, or screw machines). Let’s examine some of these advantages.

  3. Turbocor Advantages • FULL LOAD EFFICIENCY • Full load efficiency is equivalent to today’s best screw compressors.

Turbocor Advantages • PART LOAD EFFICIENCY • Coupled with a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD, standard with Turbocor) the compressor’s part load efficiency is the highest available. • This is an intrinsic characteristic of centrifugals and can save a third oncompressor energy costs annually as compared to other types of compressors. Turbocor further improves efficiency with its oil-free design (more on that later).

  6. Turbocor Advantages • VARIABLE UNLOADING • Infinitely variable unloading can be delivered from the full 100% capacity down to typically 20% of load. The compressor’s integrated variable frequency drive provides unmatched flexibility for off-peak operation. Also, inlet guide vanes (IGV) provide stable operation at light loads or high head conditions, further improving Turbocor’s unloading capability. [The specific amount of unloading should be checked for each selection.] • The compressor’s microprocessor controls the speed and IGV to deliver the right capacity and automatically prevent surge.

  7. Turbocor Advantages • HIGH RELIABILITY • With only one major moving part (the shaft/impeller assembly), extreme mechanical simplicity translates to very high reliability. There are no gear sets, multiple pistons, slide valve assemblies, mechanical bearings or seals that are the primary causes of compressor failure. • Hundreds of units operating in the field with, collectively, over 250,000 hours of operation. 98.5% uptime.

  8. Turbocor Advantages • QUIET OPERATION • “Best in Class” low sound and vibration levels set these compressors apart from all other compressor technologies. Tested at 71 dBA (sound pressure at 1 meter) without any sound attention. Screw compressors, by comparison, are approximately 80 dBA or higher. Consider that for every 3 dB reduction, the sound level is cut by 50%. • Vibration is essentially non-existent. You can rest a nickel on edge on the suction line connection during compressor operation, from startup to shutdown!

Turbocor Advantages • TRUE SOFT START • The standard Turbocor compressor requires very low starting current, drawing less than 2 amps when first energized (the power required to enable the magnetic bearings before the VFD ramps up the compressor speed to meet conditions). This totally redefines “soft start”. Turbocor compressors do not draw more than full load amps where positive displacement compressors, with cross the line starters, will frequently draw locked rotor amps (LRA) that are five to six times full load amps on startup.

The light weight and small size frequently afford original equipment manufacturers savings in the size and cost of their products. • Choosing to substitute the Turbocor for heavier, more bulky compressors dramatically reduce the costs necessary for installation or service of retrofit applications.

  13. Turbocor Advantages • OIL FREE – “FRICTIONLESS” DESIGN • Turbocor utilizes magnetic bearings and labyrinth seals that eliminate the need for oil. Most compressor failures ca be attributed to improper lubrication due to inadequate oil return and the resulting mechanical wear and tear. Pipe design becomes a function of cost and pressure drop, and not for refrigerant velocities at part load necessary for the movement of oil. A huge benefit. • Furthermore, the absence of oil eliminates an insulating oil film that diminishes heat transfer effectiveness. • And maintenance costs, larger pertaining to oil, can be reduced by up to 50%.

Turbocor Advantages • CONTROLS • The Turbocor compressor includes an integrated microprocessor that compactly controls compressor speed and bearing function, provides monitoring capability to assist commissioning, provide energy outputs, and show fault codes, and is even able to control external electric expansion valves and load balancing valves, and chiller function.
