  3. Religion • 1 Unit per term • 3 lessons each week • Daily prayers • Meditation • Friday Assembly Prayer Presentations • 2C in Week 4 – Term One • 2E in Week 9 – Term One

English (morning sessions) • 15 minutes silent reading time 3 days a week(parents invited to stay) • Whole class focused learning • Handwriting/Sound Waves text books • Talk & Tell – Oral Language Development • Literacy Groups – ability groups • Reading • Writing • Sight words/spelling words • Revision of previous weeks concepts • Computer work to consolidate learning – My Classes

Reading • Silent Reading time – using home readers. • Focus on recognising sight words • Students develop better skills at decoding unknown words • Strategies for Decoding Unknown words – Strategy Bookmark and Reading Record. • Comprehension of books is VERY important • Students are to become more fluent this year and use expression in their voice as they read • Expected reading level 18 (R) by end of year

Maths (middle session) • Introduce the focus topic for the week • Revise previous weeks topic • iMaths text book – Student Book & Tracker Book • Maths Rotations – (mixed ability groups) • Hands on learning with concrete materials • Activity sheets from iMaths or other Maths Programs • Computer work to consolidate learning – My Classes

  7. Integrated Studies Involves combining different KLA’s together to teach a concept. =Units for Semester One will be – Term 1 – “Charlotte’s Web” Term 2 – “Fables” Units for Semester Two will be – Term 3 – “Creepy Crawlies” Term 4 – “Let’s Celebrate”

  8. Specialist Lessons Each lesson is for 30minutes every week • PMP – Wednesday– Children only wear sports uniforms on Wednesday. • MUSIC – Wednesday • CULTURAL STUDIES – Friday • Term One – Germany • Term Two – France • Term Three – Torres Strait Island • Term Four - Italy

Behaviour Management • At St Joseph’s we implement the 5C’s – Care, Consideration, Commonsense, Courtesy and Co-Operation as part of our Behaviour Management Policy. • In our own classrooms we use a step program which supports the 5C’s and encourage positive behaviour in the children. • Some of the positive reinforcers are praise, stickers and rewards programs.

  10. Homework • Monday to Friday – Handed out Monday and to be completed and handed in by Friday. This will include a Literacy and Maths sheet and spelling list for the week. • Homework should take no more than 15 minutes a night, plus reading. • Reading Books - to be read each night and brought to school every morning. The children keep the four books for the four nights and return them on Friday. ALL books must be recorded in the reading record. • Spelling Words – Writing them out each night, not just copying. • Sight words – please practice these at least 2 times a week. Children on Grade 1 words – every day.

  11. Spelling Strategies for the children to learn their spelling, not just for the Friday test! Use these strategies every time they write their spelling words.

Reporting & Parent Teacher Interviews • Reports are completed at the end of Semester One and Semester Two. • Parent Teacher Interviews are conducted • During Term One (Weeks 9 & 10) • Term 3, to discuss Semester One Report card. ** If you ever have a concern, please just come and see us anytime.

  13. My Internet & My Classes • All children have access via the internet to My Classes. • My Classes provides children with other internet based activities and games especially related to our current unit and teaching. • Handout of instructions, usernames and passwords. The children have different passwords to last year. • Great way to consolidate learning at home.

  14. Birthdays • We love to celebrate birthdays with the children. • If you choose to send along a cake, please ensure that there is an adequate amount for everyone. • Cup cakes are so much easier for the children to manage.

  15. Don’t Forget… • Sports Uniforms are only to be worn on WEDNESDAY!! • Library borrowing day is TUESDAY • Banking – Dollarmites (Commonwealth Bank) - TUESDAY

How Can You Help… • Parent Helpers • Reading of a morning – Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. • Changing Home Readers – Monday Morning or Friday Afternoon • Assisting during rotations – see your teacher and check when rotations will be on. • Share your talents and abilities • Donations of unwanted materials • Magazines • Collage materials • Newspapers • Unwanted craft materials • Anything that you think might be useful!

  17. Remember… • If you ever need to come and discuss anything, or talk to us please do so. • Please complete the Parent Questionnaire and return to your class teacher by Monday next week.
