  1. Parent Orientation Night Welcome to 3rd grade Mrs. McKenzie’s Class

  2. My Teaching Philosophy • I work at building a strong relationship with your child and you in order to insure their success in school. I meet them at their point of academic need. I use their strengths to build on their weak areas. I believe that every child has their own talents. I work to help them use those talents to be successful in school.

  3. Classroom Rules • Promptly follow directions given by an adult • Respect and get along with others • Walk quietly in the building and keep hands, feet, and other objects to myself • Work quietly and efficiently so as not to disturb others • Respect school property and the property of others

  4. Rewards • Sticker Chart • Marble Jar • Table Points

  5. Consequences • 1 mark: warning • 2 marks: miss ½ recess • 3 marks: miss all recess and note/ call to parent • 4 marks: removal from group • 5 marks: office referral • Extreme case: immediate office referral

  6. Conduct folder • Behavior chart: please sign your child’s behavior chart if they got a mark that day. If they got a stamp or smiling face you don’t have to sign the chart. • Behavior Grade

  7. Thursday Folders • Important papers • Sign and return on Friday

  8. Homework folders • Homework will be given on Monday and Tuesday • Unfinished work to be taken home • 10 points off for late work • Study Hall at recess • Homework chart

  9. Snacks • Please send a snack and water bottle each day. • Lunch is at 11:54 so they will need a little snack in the morning

  10. Absences and Tardies • Tardies after 8:00 • Follow RISD guidelines • Permission form for extended absenceson APHE website • Makeup work

  11. Failing Papers • Correct for a 70 • 3 redo papers for each subject for each nine weeks grading period

  12. Grading Periods • 4 grading periods this year • 2 progress reports will go home each grading period • 4 report cards will go home

  13. Reading Log • Minute goal • Due date • Graded • Top 3 readers

  14. Reading Instruction • Word Work • Word Wall • Guided Reading Groups • Comprehension • Fluency • Phonics • DRA • Benchmark

  15. Math Instruction • Hands on Activities • Place value, multiplication, division, rounding, estimation, patterns, word problems, graphs, number lines, shapes

  16. Language Arts • Project Read Grammar • Writing Compositions • Cursive • Spelling

  17. Science • Plants, animals, habitats, solar system

  18. Social Studies • Map skills, communities, Pioneer Day

  19. Birthdays • We will sing in class. • Unfortunately, we cannot celebrate at lunch. • If you wish you can bring a healthy snack. • No birthday bags or treats

  20. School Hours • Beginning of school: First bell is at 7:50 and the tardy bell is at 8:00 • End of school. We dismiss about 2:50 • Pick up procedures: All changes in transportation must be communicated by 1:00. When emailing please also CC: Julia Stiles at jstiles@rockwallisd.org in the front office
