  3. Growth Mindset * Mindset is a simple idea that makes all the difference * We promote a growth mindset by: - Emphasizing dedication and hard work - Modeling a love of learning - Encouraging parents to support us “I can’t do it….yet!”

  4. Literacy Time (Language Arts) • Balanced Literacy • Guided Reading: small groups • Shared Reading: in group or as a class • Independent Reading: read to self • Sight Word Practice: high frequency words • Phonics and spelling program • Students need to be reading 10 minutes Monday-Thursday for homework

  5. Literacy Rotations Read to Self Read to Someone Listen to Reading Word Work Work on Writing

  6. Blended Literacy • Students will learn about writing through reading • They will experiment with writing a variety of genres including narrative, expository, poetry, and more

  7. Math * CGI (word problems – students find their own strategy to solve problem) * Practice counting to 100 and skip counting by 10’s * Small group math rotations including CGI, hands on activities, and technology (laptops, tablets, and SMART board)

  8. Social Studies/Science Integrated throughout our curriculum Study trips reinforce these concepts while exposing kids to real-life experiences Hands-on science activities STEM Fair (October 18th): science projects plus math and technology booths and activities

Study Trips • Students must wear a red shirt and khaki bottoms • Students need to bring or preorder a sack lunch • Parents must drive themselves (may not ride the bus) – siblings may not attend • Child must ride with parents when chaperoning to free up space on the bus • Will inform parents about upcoming trips and costs in newsletter • Parents must have turned in a background check to chaperone

  10. Homework Reading: 10 minutes Monday-Thursday (guided reading book that is sent home in book bag) Spelling: two sight words a week – will practice in class and can practice at home too Check red folders daily and initial behavior calendar (Please look for special assignments and notes) Optional Monthly Choice Board: students may complete activities to support in-class learning and to reinforce responsibility and time management

  11. Rest Time We have rest time for the first month of school as the students transition into the longer school day expectations. Your child may bring a small blanket or towel (no stuffed animals or pillows, please.) They can send it in on Monday and it will be sent back home on Thursday to be washed for the following week. Rest time will end at the end of August.

  12. Student Birthdays * Let your child’s teacher know if you are planning on bringing treats (check with teacher about student allergies) • Drop the treats off in the morning or bring them to school at 3:00 (sign in at front office first) • If you bring treats, please also bring plates and napkins • No goody bags or drinks, please • If you’re having a party outside of school, please bring invitations for the entire class

  13. Snacks and Lunch We have 2 snacks per day: morning and afternoon. Your child may bring snacks from home. We do have some class snack that is for students that do not bring one. Breakfast and lunches need to be pre-ordered online a week in advance. You will use www.myschoolaccount.com to order meals and add money to your child’s account. You can also pay cash or check in person to the cafeteria staff.

  14. Homeroom Parents/Volunteering Please tell your teacher if you are interested in helping as a homeroom parent. These parents will help with classroom parties, recruiting volunteers for school events such as Jag Fest, the Fun Run, etc. Each family is expected to volunteer 20 hours of their time per school year. These can be fulfilled by chaperoning study trips, helping in or out of class, and volunteering at school functions. Please log your hours in the office.
