  2. Four Steps Needed for Process • Connect equipment • Capture • Edit • Export

  3. Connect Equipment • If using a digital video camcorder: • Connect IEEE 1394 output on camera to IEEE 1394 input on host computer. • IEEE 1394 is also called “Firewire” or “iLink.” • If using a VHS recorder: • Connect audio and video outputs of VHS machine to a capture box (e.g. Director’s Cut). • Connect capture box to computer.

  4. Capture • Pre-roll • An amount of time before scene starts. Allows for accurate editing. • Start Recording • Some software calls this “Import” or “Capture.” • Relax while the computer captures the selection. • Post-roll • An amount of time after scene ends. Allows for accurate editing. • Stop Recording • This is usually done by clicking the same button used to start recording.

  5. Edit • Head edit • Select the actual starting point of the scene. This will delete the pre-roll. • Creative edits • Do whatever works for your project. • This step is not always needed. • Tail edit • Select the actual ending point of the scene. This will delete the post-roll.

  6. Export • Choose delivery medium. • Laptop/desktop computer • Web • Dial-up modem • Cable modem/DSL • Ethernet • Choose an export format (e.g. QuickTime, Real, Windows Media). • Choose the appropriate audio and video codecs (e.g. MPEG-4, Dolby AAC, etc.). • Relax while the computer works.
