Join Leticia Bonita Prince, a 4th-year MChem student at Newcastle University, for an insightful presentation on carboxylic acids. Explore their general structure (RCOOH), and learn about their unique properties, including their ability as hydrogen bond donors and acceptors. Delve into nomenclature rules, solubility, and how carboxylic acids differ from alcohols in terms of boiling points and acidity. Enhance your spatial skills using CCDC software while engaging with practical examples and answering questions on the WebCSD database.

Carboxylic Acids Presented by Leticia Bonita Prince Newcastle University 4th Year MChem Student
Aims of Today • Increase your understanding of carboxylic acids • Increase your spatial skills and awareness using software designed by the CCDC
What are Spatial Skills? • The ability to mentally manipulate 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional figures. • Important in chemistry, biology, medicine, mathematics, physics and everyday life.
Carboxylic Acids • They have the general formula RCOOH (R= H, CH3, CH2CH3etc). • Good Hydrogen bond DONORS and ACCEPTORS.
Nomenclature • Look at the R group and add “-oic acid” to it. • If there are two carboxylic acid functional groups, you will add –dioic acid to it.
Salts • Carboxylic acids are more acid than alcohols because their conjugate base is resonance stabilised. • This anion can form a salt by bonding ionically with a metal such as sodium.
Boiling Points • Carboxylic acids have higher boiling points than alcohols. • They dimerise through hydrogen bonding creating a bigger molecule which has larger van der Waals’ – more energy to overcome.
Solubility • In water, the carboxylic acid will form hydrogen bonds with water instead of dimerisingwhich is why some are soluble. • HOWEVER, if there is a large alkyl chain (5 carbons +) the carboxylic won’t dissolve due the hydrophobic nature of the R group.
