  3. Child Rights Realisation • States have primary duty • Everyone has a role to play • Business – large or small – has great impact (operations, product, marketing)

  4. Child Rights Realisation • Business – much beyond shareholders and compliance with laws • Part of large social contract • Core strategies responsive to - Environmental, Political, Social issues

  5. UN Global Compact • Established in 2000 • 10 UN Global Compact Principles • Children’s Right and Business Principles build on UN Global compact and other initiatives • Promotes child centric CSR agenda

  6. Why Children? • Business community must invest in children • Children < 18 - 1/3 of world’s population • Childhood – Unique period of rapid development • Childhood deprivations – Long lasting and disastrous • Stable and sustainable future

  7. 10 Principles All Business Should Follow • Meet their responsibility to respect children’s rights and commit to supporting the human rights • - All business should put in place appropriate policies and processes, as set out in the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights endorsed by the United Nations Human Rights Council

  8. 10 Principles All Business Should Follow • 2) Contribute to the elimination of child labour, including in all business activities and business relationships • Work with governments, social partners and others to promote education and sustainable solutions to the root causes of child labour • The H&M Project in Dharmapuri & Salem, Tamil Nadu has a comprehensive approach to prevent and eliminate child labour

  9. 10 Principles All Business Should Follow • 3) Provide decent work for young workers, parents and caregivers • Provide decent work for young workers, including age appropriate social protection and health information services. • Provide decent working conditions that also supports both women and men, in their roles as parents or caregivers

  10. 10 Principles All Business Should Follow • 4) Ensure the protection and safety of children in all business activities and facilities • Develop and implement a child protection code of conduct for business operations. • The hospitality & tourism industry should adhere to the Code of Conduct for Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism

  11. 10 Principles All Business Should Follow • 5) Ensure that products and services are safe, and seek to support children’s rights through them • Seek to prevent and eliminate the risk that products and services could be used to abuse, exploit or other wise harm children in anyway (e.g., toxic materials used for toys) • Take steps to maximize the accessibility and availability of products and services that are essential to children’s survival and development

  12. 10 Principles All Business Should Follow • 6) Use marketing and advertising that respect and support children’s rights • Ensure that communications and marketing do not have an adverse impact on children’s rights • Use marketing that raises awareness and promotes children’s rights, healthy lifestyles and non-violent values

  13. 10 Principles All Business Should Follow • 7) Respect and support children’s rights in relation to the environment and to land acquisition and use • Respect children’s rights in relation to the environment, and when acquiring and using land for business operations • Take measures to progressively reduce the emission of green house gases from company operations and promote resource use that is sustainable.

  14. 10 Principles All Business Should Follow • 8) Respect and support children’s rights in security arrangements • Respecting children’s rights by not recruiting or use children in security arrangements either directly or through private or public security service providers.

  15. 10 Principles All Business Should Follow • 9) Help protect children affected by emergencies • Help protect children whose rights are affected by emergencies by raising awareness among workers and community members of the increased risks of violence, abuse and exploitation of children in such contexts • During Tsunami, corporates provided support towards health care and skill based education

  16. 10 Principles All Business Should Follow • 10) Reinforce community and government efforts to protect and fulfill children’s rights • Support government efforts to protect and promote children’s rights by undertaking strategic programmes for children • One of the corporates in Tamil Nadu has constructed household toilets in the adopted villages. Like wise, one can focus on health, education, water and sanitation, etc.,
