Edwards Middle School: Results • Declining enrollment reversed in dramatic turnaround—parents and students are selecting Edwards as top school choice • In 2006, 17 rising 6th graders chose Edwards Middle School as their first choice. In 2009, 250 rising 6th graders chose Edwards Middle School as their first choice, resulting in the creation of a waiting list. • Impressive performing arts program that has sent many graduates to Boston’s audition-based performing arts high school • Selected to participate in Fidelity FutureStage Program by Fidelity Investments and Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation • Only middle school football team in Boston (went 4-1 against the suburbs in its first year) • Principal promoted to Academic Superintendent of Boston Middle and K-8 Schools

Edwards 8th Graders vs. State 8th Graders (ELA & Math) Progress toward Eliminating the Achievement Gap 80% reduction in ELA gap; outperformed state in math EdwardsState ELA Math CPI = Composite Performance Index. State DOE calculated measure of progress toward proficiency for all students. Used to determine AYP in MA. 100% Proficient = CPI Score of 100. For each student, proficient or above=100; high “needs improvement”=75; low “needs improvement”=50; high “fail/warning”=25; low “fail/warning’=0. *During the 2008 – 09 school year, 30.7% of Massachusetts’ students were low income while 89.4% of Edwards MS students were low income.
