BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS • Telephone sets for PBX systems are proprietary to specific manufacturers….Avaya phones only work on an Avaya PBX • Digital phones do not work on analog POTS lines (land lines) • A PBX can be programed to support analog phones but the analog phones have limited capabilities

  3. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS • Digital phones fall under two categories, sets with LCDs (Liquid Crystal Display) and sets that don’t have LCD displays

  4. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS Here is a Meridian phone with the LCD, the LCD type phones are the ones used to program a PBX

  5. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS These LCD type phones are more expensive ($200-$500) and provide caller ID, time and date and can show menu features to locally program the phone for language, screen sounds, etc.

BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS • Digital telephone sets get their power from the PBX so there is no power cord or transformer needed • Each telephone set is cross wired from the extension block to the station block with one pair cross wire, this provides both the digital signal and power to the phone • Older PBX systems require two pair cross wire, one for the signal and one for power, one pair (signal) was wired to the blue pair and the other pair (power) to the green pair on the station side

  7. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS Each PBX system will support an attendant console which is located at the receptionist desk, in large scale environments this phone will have add on modules to support the many different extension in a company

BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS • The next slide will show a close up of an electronic digital phone set and the many features available with these types of phones • Each set comes with a user manual that will describe the functions of the different keys and how to program the phone • These phones also provide voice prompts for programming features and setting up voice mail

BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS • As stated earlier programming of a PBX is typically done through a menu-driven (LCD) telephone that can display prompt options • Some PBX will accommodate programming through a laptop as well as a menu driven phone • In all cases every system is password protected so that only an administrator can make changes to the PBX

  11. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS The following are some basic programming functions: Call forwarding Call hold and reminder tones Conference call DID Music on Hold Night service Toll restrictions
