  1. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS PBX boards and other components part ll

  2. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS PBX cabinets house circuit boards or have provisions to add fully enclosed expansion modules that provide specific functions, these include: Both way trunk boards: these are used to place outside calls or receive incoming calls. The boards can be purchased with 32, 16, 8, 4 or 2 ports per board. Each port is assigned it’s own 7 digit phone number.

  3. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS DID trunk boards: These are used only for incoming calls. These boards allow direct access to any particular phone connected to the PBX. One separate DID trunk board can provide 10 separate telephone numbers. They can come configured for 32, 16 or 8 trunks. How many separate phone numbers can be provided by an eight port DID trunk?

  4. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS Universal Trunk Boards: They can be configured to accommodate both-way trunks and DID trunks on the same board, which makes efficient use of all ports on the board and saves space in the system. T-1 Boards: This type of board is common in large PBX systems and can process 24 simultaneous incoming and outgoing voice conversations.

  5. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS PRI or BRI ISDN boards: Similar to a T-1 board these boards accept ISDN interface circuits. The PRI 23 B channel and 1 D channel board is the type of line used for most current PBX systems. These boards allow both voice and data transmission. Tie-line boards: These boards are used to link two or more PBX systems over a dedicated line in a network so the systems can communicate without using outside lines.

  6. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS Digital Telephone boards: These board are for the proprietary digital phones used on the system. They are sometimes called station boards and can support 32, 16 or 8 digital telephone sets. Analog Telephone boards: These analog station boards can accommodate 8 or 16 analog sets (like the one in your home) and fax machines as well as modems.

  7. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS DTMF boards: Touch tone signaling requires DTMF boards with multiple DTMF receivers to prevent dial tone delay when multiple calls are being dialed. Common Control boards: These provide the central processing capabilities for large PBX systems.

  8. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS Many PBX cabinets come pre-configured for a specific amount of incoming CO lines and outgoing stations. Some common configuration are: 4 X 8; 4 CO lines (POTS) and 8 stations 4 X 16 8 X 16 8 X 24

  9. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS • Larger PBXs will have a T-1 or ISDN interface trunk card that can support 100s of users • Today many phone switches can also provide VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and cordless phones • All phone switches are also equipped with a 24 hour emergency phone line that provides dial tone when the power goes out

  10. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS Nortel DMS 100 Switch Can you think of a place that may require a PBX of this size?

  11. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS • Many PBXs incorporate a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) back up system in case of a power failure • For many businesses the loss of phone service can have a crippling effect on profitability and even small businesses now have a national if not international foot print • In addition to providing back up power the UPS can also provide surge protection from building ground faults and lightning strikes

  12. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS Another separate component in a PBX system is voice mail. This unit provides the voice mail box for all the users on the voice network and can accommodate customized voice greetings that can be changed at anytime It also provides customized company greetings for incoming calls and a general mailbox

  13. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS • Another component of PBX systems are the software packages to support the operation of the system • PBX software is multifunctional. Its primary function is to connect, route and disconnect phone calls between users. • Typically, PBX software gives users access to a wide variety of value-added functions like auto attendant, voicemail, Interactive Voice Response (IVR), fax, conference calling and call waiting

  14. BASIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS Another common addition to PBX systems is the paging system, this is also a separate component that is not included in the PBX cabinet
