  5. Homework • Read article “Doing Algebra in Grade K-4” • On a note card, write one idea you got out of the article and one thing you learned from today.

  6. Order of Operations • Order of Operations Puzzle • Calculators • 16 + 4 x 10 • 24/6 x 2

  7. Caged Mice Problem Ricky has 7 pet mice. He keeps them in two cages. One cage is red and the other is blue. Show all the ways that 7 mice can be placed in these two cages. • In groups of two, you are to find all the combinations of the number given to you. • How do you know you have all the combinations?

  9. Relational Thinking with Properties • Do numbers 1-12 and think about the properties being used to solve these problems.

Algebra Number Sentences • Work with a partner to solve for the variable using ONLY your understanding of equality, relational thinking, and basic number properties….NO formal algebra. • Do the first 5 problems. You will need pages 70-75 from your book. Do a problem then read about it….continue this through the 5th problem. • Do the remaining problems on the page and then we will watch the video on the last 5 problems.

  12. Summarize Relational Thinking and Early Algebra • In groups, write 3 big ideas about relational thinking . • What do students need to know and understand about relational thinking and early algebra? • Why is it important to understand relational thinking and early algebra?

  13. Homework for March 7-8 • Read chapter 4 from your Thinking Mathematically book • Do Mice in a Cage activity with your students. • Read the article provided and apply it to your students. Be prepared to come back and discuss the outcomes and the article with the group.
