This research explores the alarming phenomenon of students not thinking in classrooms and aims to redefine how we engage learners. By investigating what non-thinking looks like, how common it is across different educational contexts, and under which circumstances it occurs, we aim to understand the challenges educators face. Additionally, we will discuss the creation and sustainability of thinking classrooms, emphasizing that the goal of teaching should focus on student learning, not merely delivering content.

RETHINKING STUDENT THINKING Peter Liljedahl
Two areas of research: • Researching studentsNOT thinking! • what does it look like? • how prevalent is it? • what occassions it? • Creating thinking classrooms! • what does it look like? • how do we build one? • how do we sustain one? Students Don’t Think!
what does it look like? • studenting • how prevalent is it? • every classroom (with rare exception) • what occasions it? • anonymity • expectations • proxies for learning and teaching Researching Students NOT Thinking
what does it look like? • engagement, flow, loud, interactive • how do we build one? • with extreme intervention • how do we sustain one? • by avoiding proxies Creating thinking classrooms
