  2. Historical Context • NHS Fife became a GSA centre in the mid 90’s following a restraint related fatality. • Various modes of delivery were attempted. • Demand was greater than availability. • Mounting evidence cast doubt on efficacy of techniques in high stress situations.

  3. NFPS Ltd • National Federation for Personal Safety • Legally audited, tested in court & tribunal. • NFPS Training complies with; • Common & Criminal Law • Human Rights Act 1998 • HASWA 1974 (inc Manual Handling Regulations) • NICE guidelines • Mental Health Act

  4. NFPS Ltd (Continued) • Fewer physical skills over a 2 day period • Training methodology is founded in human physiology And • Ockham’s Razor (Keeping it Simple!)

  5. Implications For Training • 2 day Physical Interventions Course. • ½ day Breakaway Course. (Both refreshed annually) • Focus now on “safe outcomes” rather than “technical proficiency”. • “Dynamic Training”

  6. Feedback • Staff report techniques being “easier to pick upand easier to remember”. They also now remark on “feeling valued by management”. • Ward managers report increased confidence and reduction of incidents. • Hospital Managers are happy at the savings the new system has brought.
