  4. Course Objectives • To improve your English skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing • To focus on academic English so you can perform well in all your school courses • To help you adjust culturally and socially to your new life in the United States

  6. Reading You will read a variety of texts: • Literature - Short Stories, Poetry, Legends • Math – Informational & Expository Texts • Social Studies - Historical Nonfiction and Expository Texts

  7. Reading Strategies To improve your reading skills: • Ask questions • Draw conclusions • Analyze author’s purpose • Recognize symbols • Make inferences • Visualize • Distinguish fact from opinion

  8. Grammar We will practice: • Conjunctions • Conjunctions in compound sentences • Complex sentences • Compound-complex sentences • Prepositional phrases • Appositives • Indefinite pronouns • Declarative, imperative, declarative, and interrogative sentences

  9. Writing You will write: • Short stories • Expository essays • Problem-solution • Persuasive • Informative • Autobiographical narrative

  10. Listening & Speaking You will… • Tell a personal story • Describe characteristics of poetry • Recite poetry from memory • Give a demonstration speech • Deliver a presentation with visual aids
