  1. Adventures in Grantsmanship: Do’s and Don’ts Tina D. Rollins Library Director Hampton University

  2. Background The William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library has applied for a number of grants within the last four years. This presentation will share our experiences with seeking and managing awards. Additonally, we will share tips to assist in successful grant management.

  3. Current Funded Awards National Endowment for the Humanities award in the amount of $39,955.00 entitled: Wade in the Water: Preservation Environment Plan for the Peabody Collection at the Harvey Library at Hampton University.  Project Period: 1/1/2017-6/30/2018 Institute of Museum and Library Services award in the amount of $99,980.The grant allowed the library to host a national forum from August 1-2, 2018 to discuss recruitment and retention of minority library professionals in the Library and Information Sciences field. Project Period: 10/1/2017 -9/30/2019.   National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grants award in the amount of $5,916. With the funding, The William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library purchased flat file cabinets to house its architectural thesis drawings collection. Project Period: 1/1/17- 9/30/19

  4. What I have Learned • Applying for grants is not easy. • It can make you crazy. • Teamwork makes the dream work.

  5. Do’s • Familiarize yourself with the university’s grant process. • Research, Research, Research! • Find a grant that can fund a project in which you are familiar with the subject matter. • Know the needs and wants of your library. • Reach out to the Program Manager of the awarding agency. • Make a timeline of due dates.

  6. Do’s • Find examples of funded projects. • Create your project budget as early as possible. • Find published research to support your narrative. • Have someone proofread your work!!!!!!! • Triple check the application requirements. • Solicit letters of support from campus partners. • Turn in everything on time!!!!!!

  7. Don’ts • Procrastinate!!! • Delegate everything. • Be unorganized. • Make unrealistic budgets. • Lack patience. • Wait until the last minute to turn in reports or updates. • Be afraid of failure!

  8. Other Tips • Become a grant reviewer. • Look for opportunities to collaborate with campus and community partners. • Be optimistic. • Try, Try, Try again!
