  1. Roles in Plot Erica Johns and Brian Miller

  2. Protagonist • The main character of a literary narrative around whom the events of the narrative's plot revolve and with whom the audience is intended to share the most empathy. • Also referred to as a Hero (males) or Heroine (females) • Examples: • Harry Potter • Batman • Superman

  3. Antagonist • A character or a group of characters that represents the opposition against which the protagonist must contend • Also referred to as the villain • Examples: • Edmund -- Shakespeare's King Lear • Dracula -- Stoker’s Dracula • Simon Legree -- Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin • Voldemort -- Harry Potter

  4. Foil • A character who contrasts with another character (usually the protagonist) in order to highlight various features of that other character's personality • Examples: • In Othello, Emilia is a foil for Desdemona. • In Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio is a foil for Romeo. • In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Biddy serves as a foil for Estella.
