  1. Ohio Department of Education: State Developed Assessments Test Specifications: Science

  2. Proposed Timeline • 2013-2014: Field tests for science (Grades 5 & 8, high school biology, and high school physical science) • 2014-2015: Standard setting implementation of new assessments

  3. Grade Levels and Courses Being Assessed • Grade 5 Science • Grade 8 Science • Physical Science • Biology

  4. Common Characteristics • Two-part Summative Assessment • Performance-Based Assessment (PBA): administered approximately three quarters of the way through the year • End-of-Year Assessment (EOY): administered near the end of the year

  5. More Common Characteristics • Online format for both PBA and EOY • PBA and EOA will both consist of graphic-response and short-answer items • In addition, PBA will contain constructed response items that will require students to type a response into the computer interface

  6. Still More Common Characteristics • Outcomes are reported back to the school by the end of the year. • After the student has completed both parts of the assessment, his or her scores will be combined to yield a comprehensive view of the student’s progress.

  7. Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) • 9-12 items worth 20 points overall • Following PARCC model, PBA will present a combination of items and tasks, or sets of items linked to stimuli drawing the student into deeper analysis and interpretation than might ordinarily be possible in a single item
