  1. Metrics in Measurement Length and Temperature – Part 3

  2. Length A measure of how long something is end to end • Unit of measurement – meters(m) • Tool – meter stick or metric ruler • This may also include distance • This space between points or objects • Perimeter • The distance around an object

  3. HOW TO USE A METRIC RULER • The smaller lines are millimeters (mm) and the larger lines are (cm)

  4. Temperature A measure of the amount of warmness or coldness in an object • Unit of measurement - deg Celsius (oc) • Tool - thermometer

  5. Thermometer • A calibrated, or numbered, glass tube containing mercury or colored alcohol • The liquid in the tube rises, or expands, when warmth of an object increases. The mercury falls when the warmth of an object decreases. • The calibrated scale on the tube of the thermometer allows us to read the temperature

  6. How HOT or COLD? • The average human body temperature is 37 oC. • A hot summer's day in Florida would be close to 38 oC. • A comfortable room temperature would be around 21 oC. • A pot of boiling water is 100 oC. • The temperature of a pitcher of iced tea would be around 14 oC. • A cold winter day with a high wind chill factor might be below freezing at -5 oC.
