  7. What is Standards-in-Action? • A series of innovations to support standards-based education • Opportunities for instructors (and administrators) to delve into standards as part of a learning community

  8. Project Goals • Develop a team to lead standards-based instruction in writing at VAL. • Align curriculum, texts, instruction and other resources to the EFF standards. • Use this project to develop a sustainable model for cross-site teams to develop standards-based education across instructional areas.

  9. State Lead Team Responsibilities • Implement all four SIA innovations at VAL through this team • Support this group in implementation • Communicate regularly with VAL and national project staff about our progress

  11. The Four Innovations: Standards-Based Education • Success of standards-based education is like a three-legged stool—no one element can stand alone without the other two for stability and support.

  12. The starting point and first leg is to build instructors’ understanding of the standards.

  13. The next SIA priority—and the second leg—is for instructors to: • Translate the standards into curriculum for students • Align student assignments to standards

  14. The third SIA priority—and final leg—is accountability. • In SIA terms that means: • Assessing the extent to which instructors are teaching to the standards and using effective instruction • Creating innovative solutions when performance falls short of the mark

  15. The Four Innovations • Unit 1: Understanding the Standards We Teach • Unit 2: Translating Standards into Curriculum: The Lead Standards Approach • Unit 3: Focus on Assignments: Working Together to Improve Teaching and Learning • Unit 4: Observing Standards-in-Action

  16. Pertain to your work with students in the classroom • Provide just-in-time and targeted support over time • Make our instructors full and active partners in transforming our classrooms • Create aligned standards-based resources for classrooms • Build on and support one another

Where are we going? • Understanding the Standards We Teach… • Pull apart the standards so we can understand their real demands • Build or align different expressions to the standards (sample activities, resources) • Translating Standards into Curriculum: The Lead Standards Approach… • Work to efficiently translate standards into meaningful curriculum tools

Where are we going? • Focus on Assignments: Working Together to Improve Teaching and Learning… • Critical Friends Groups examine assignments for their alignment to the standards • Observing Standards-in-Action… • Observe classroom instruction to identify professional development needs
