  3. Dialysis and Kidney Dissection For each group of 4 students: • Have two students set up the dialysis experiment • Have the other two students start the kidney dissection

  4. Dialysis of Albumin and NaCl • Add albumin & NaCl using separate pipettes • Tie bag • Incubate for one hour • Test beaker water using biuret reagent for protein and silver nitrate for Cl- ions

PhysioEx 9, Activity 1: Effect of arteriole radius on GFR • Disregard instructions on Lab 9-15. • Start with an afferent radius of 0.60 mm! • Efferent = 0.30 mm • Decrease afferent radius by 0.5 until it equals 0.35 mm • Start with an afferent radius of 0.50 mm! • Efferent = 0.45 mm • Decrease efferent radius by 0.5 until it equals 0.30 mm • Record data in a modified version of table 3

PhysioEx 9, Activity 1: Effect of arteriole radius on GFR • Table 3 (page Lab 9-20) modifications • Column headings should be: • Afferent arteriole radius (mm) • Glomerular Capillary Pressure (mm Hg) • Glomerular Filtration Rate (ml/min) • Urine Volume (ml) • Last 4 runs, enter efferent instead of afferent radius • Final row will be blank! • Please change table 3 accordingly.

  30. Complete data table and homework on pages 9-19 to 9-20. Attach a sketch of the microscopic sediments found in your urine. Construct and properly label six graphs using the data from tables 3 and 4. Instructions for the graphs are on p. 9-20. You can use plotting software, e.g., Excel, if you like. Please Leave the Lab Areas Clean • Gloves and tissue scraps to biohazard bucket • Dissecting trays & instruments washed and replaced • Urines flushed down the sink with plenty of water • Urine centrifuge tubes washed, rinsed, and disinfected; then returned to their racks to dry. • Urine cups, dipsticks, & paper towels in regular trash • Used microscope slide cover slips in sharps containers • Plain microscope slides washed and returned to microscope slide boxes • Test tubes washed and returned to racks to dry • Disinfect lab table and sink surfaces
