  3. Background • Provost Allen (2010) published white paper calling for review of the USP 2003 • Launched three task forces to review and implement an outcomes-based program

  4. USP Stage 1 • USP Stage 1 Task Force (2011) - recommended student-learning outcomes (Indy Burke) • Based on Essential Learning Outcomes developed by Association of American Colleges and Universities as part of its LEAP campaign (Liberal Education and America's Promise) • Outcomes organized in three broad categories: • breadth of knowledge • skills and competencies • personal and social responsibility

  5. USP Stage 2 • USP Stage 2 Task Force(2012) - adopted learning outcomes developed by Stage 1 Task Force with minor modifications • Led by Professor Alyson Hagy • Three broad categories preserved • Fifteen learning outcomes emerged • Proposed 30 semester hours of coursework

USP Stage 3 Task Force 3 consists of volunteers: • Jim Ahern (A&S-Anth) • Penne Ainsworth (COB) • Mark Byra (HS) • Jo Chytka (CACS, COB) • April Heaney (LeaRN) • Joel Defebaugh (ASUW) – President ASUW • Ed Janak (COE) – Chair-elect Faculty Senate • Duncan Harris (Honors) • Erika Prager (AA-Assessment) • Rebecca Roberts (A&S-COJO) • John Spitler (A&S-Math) • Steve Barrett – chair(CEAS)

USP Stage 3 • Developed comprehensive package of USP Learning Outcomes, Outcome Curriculum Map, and guidelines for course transition and development • Proposed launch date of Fall 2015 • Developed online, two-track course approval process: • College-level approval process for majority of courses • University Studies Committee approval process for First Year Seminar (FYS) and Communication (COM) sequence courses

USP Stage 3 • Goal is to have a fully online approval process • Pending LMS and CMS implementation • Developed positions to coordinate various USP areas: • Rick Fisher, Communication Sequence • Kari Morgan, First-Year Seminar • Patricia Colberg, Assessment Scholar • Karen Williams, Assessment Scholar

UW USP 2015 Overview Foundation Freshman Composition (Communication 1) + First Year Seminar + Quantitative Reasoning [9 hrs]   *Courses to be completed freshman year. *Students may take any FYS of their choosing. Communication Skills  Communication 2 (intermediate skills) + Communication 3 (advanced skills) [6 hrs] *Writing/speaking/digital communication combined as appropriate. *These courses may be embedded in majors. Human Culture  Coursework in the arts, humanities, languages, social sciences, and histories [6 hr minimum] *Departments will be given the opportunity to designate courses as H or PN. *A course cannot fulfill the requirement for both categories. * Courses can be required for the major, but not those taken from the major department. Physical and Natural World Coursework in science, technology, engineering and mathematics [6 hr minimum]   *Departments will be given the opportunity to designate courses as H or PN. *A course cannot fulfill the requirement for both categories. * Courses can be required for the major, but not those taken from the major department. General Policies • A course can satisfy only one USP category • Most courses should be at 1000- or 2000-level • A specific FYS cannot be required for the major • COM2 and COM3 courses can be embedded within a major • Students must take FYS course their first or second semester at UW • Students must earn C- in FYS, COM 1, COM 2 • H and PN can be required for the major, but not those taken from the major department • Q may be waived with appropriate ACT/SAT or Math Placement score

Policy and RecommendationsUSP 2015 Overall • Per existing articulation agreements, students entering UW with earned Associate Degrees (AA or AS), from accredited institutions, will be exempt from USP 2015 with the exception of COM 3. • Current UW students with less than 60 earned hours, may opt into USP 2015 to replace USP 2003 or 1991 requirements.

Policy and RecommendationsUSP 2015 Overall • FYS and COM courses will be limited to 24 students. • Required to effectively employ types of pedagogies and assignments needed for inquiry-based courses • Consistent with national guidelines and to aid students. • Exceptions on a case-by-case basis by the USP Committee consistent with course outcomes • Important for CC student to also check specific general studies requirements for UW College of interest

  17. Policy and RecommendationsFirst Year Seminar • First-year students (less than 30 hours of post-high school graduation credit) will take the first year seminar (FYS) during their first or second semester. • A student opting into USP2015 with 30-60 hours will be exempt from FYS seminar.

Policy and RecommendationsFirst Year Seminar • Students failing to successfully complete FYS during their first or second semester will be required to successfully complete a FYS makeup course during their third semester or they will be held from registering for the next semester. Students are required to obtain advisor approval to drop FYS. • Makeup FYS course under development • Students may take any FYS of their choosing.

Policy and RecommendationsFirst Year Seminar • Departments must submit syllabi to the University Studies Committee annually for all approved FYS courses. • Colleges were apportioned FYS sections based on percentage of college majors within the first-year class. • For the FYS course to be successful, it is essential to have a sufficient number of sections offered in Fall 2015. • Allocation based on percentage of majors also accounts for undeclared majors.

Policy and RecommendationsFreshman Year Seminar • FYS courses will be taught by highly motivated and experienced instructors • Prefer instructors who have had some experience teaching 1000 or 2000 level courses that included learning outcomes specific to critical thinking • Instructors who wish to include graduate student assistants (GAs) in the delivery of an FYS course will be required to explain the role of GA(s) in the course • FYS instructors should be engaged in professional development regarding development of first-year seminar curriculum and first-year instruction

Policy and RecommendationsCommunication Skills • COM 2 courses preferably should be provided at a foundational 1000 and 2000 level. • The Communication 2 and 3 (COM 2 and COM 3) requirements may be included within required major’s courses. • Departments must submit syllabi every three years to the University Studies Committee for all approved COM courses.

Process • Approval for H, PN, V, and Q courses granted by college • COM1, COM2, COM3, FYS courses require USP Committee approval • Process overview • Proposal initiator • Department chair/head • College Curriculum Committee • If unit doesn’t report to a college, then proposals go directly to USP Committee (for all categories) • USP Committee (only for COM1, COM2, COM3, and FYS) • CARF is required only in limited circumstances; USP committee will send approvals in batches to Registrar’s Office

Articulation • Departments that articulate courses with community colleges must ensure through the articulation process that the articulated courses meet the learning outcomes. • H, PN, and V courses require a subset of the critical and creative thinking student learning outcomes • COM1 will remain the same (with addition of a short unit on the three types of communication) • COM2 courses will look different than current WB courses • Foundational oral communication skills and oral practice • Community college courses for which there is no UW course may apply for USP credit by following the UW process (college or USP depending on the course category)
