  2. “Era of Good Feelings” • Following the War of 1812, America celebrated war heroes and respect from other nations • Transportation is improved and the nation was growing rapidly • New industries develop – Textile production in New England • Monroe’s presidency is a time of national unity

The Industrial Revolution • Eli Whitney invented interchangeable parts and the cotton gin • James Hargreaves invented the spinning jenny • Samuel Slater began a “factory system” in RI • Francis Cabot Lowell began a model mill town in Massachusetts • Capitalists invested money (capital) in new businesses

Transportation Improvements • Corduroy roads are made of logs • Flatboats can float downstream in rivers • Lancaster Tpke. stretched from Philadelphia to Lancaster, PA • National Road – Maryland to West Virginia • Robert Fulton launches a steamboat in the Hudson River • DeWitt Clinton promotes the building of the Erie Canal

Sectionalism – Loyalty to a region of a country rather than the nation as a whole. • Calhoun (South) was a firm defender of slavery and against a strong federal government • Webster (North) was opposed to slavery and favored a strong federal government • Clay (West) was a War Hawk during the War of 1812 and proposed the American Plan – tariffs would pay for internal improvements

  6. Tariff Issues • Northern textile mill owners are concerned about foreign competition from Britain • Congress passes the Tariff of 1816 which increases the cost of British cloth sold in the U.S. • Southerners oppose the tariff as they buy imported cloth and sell cotton to European mills

  7. Supreme Court Cases that strengthen the power of the federal government • McCulloch v. Maryland – states have no right to interfere with federal institutions within their borders • Gibbons v. Ogden – federal government can regulate trade between states (interstate commerce) John Marshallwas the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

U.S. Gains Florida • White southerners were concerned with Creek and Seminole Indian raids across Florida’s borders • “Black Seminoles” – African Americans who seek refuge with Seminoles • Andrew Jackson invades Florida to break up Negro Fort • Adams-Onis Treaty – U.S. gains Florida for $5 million
