  1. Turn in Homework to the basket. • Please pick up a world map • Take out your map pencils. You will need nine different colors. 

  2. Objective • Explain the influence of climate on the distribution of biomes in different regions.

  3. Biome: a major regional group of plants and animals adapted to the environment (ecosystems).

  4. Two Types of Biomes: Terrestrial (land) Aquatic (water)

  5. #1 Tundra: an area where the tree growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons.Northern most landmass (Alaska, Canada and Russia)

  6. Tundra

  7. You will find permafrost or permanently frozen soil in tundra areas.

  8. Areas of tundra have high winds, little rain, and temperatures that dip into –70 degrees.

  9. Tundra tends to be rich in natural resources like oil and uranium, and low in animal and plant diversity.

  10. #2 Taiga: cold, northern coniferous forest(boreal forest)

  11. Taiga

  12. Taiga is thelargest biome and a major supplier of oxygen.

  13. Temperatures barely climb above freezing in taiga and there is little sun because it barely climbs above the horizon.

  14. #3 Grassland: open flat areas of grass

  15. Grasslands

  16. Areas of grasslandhave little precipitation and are plains or low rolling hills (cover the central region of most continents).

  17. #4 Deciduous Forest: areas in which the trees lose their leaves each year.

  18. Deciduous Forest

  19. #5 Chaparral: dense vegetation consisting of stunted trees or bushes

  20. Chaparral is hot and dry with common wildfires.

  21. #6 Desert: a dry, often sandy region of little rainfall and sparse vegetation

  22. Desert

  23. Areas of desert receive less than 10 inches of rain a year.

  24. #7 Savanna: tropical grasslands with scattered trees or shrubs

  25. Savanna

  26. Areas of savanna have a long dry season and a very wet season.

  27. #8 Rainforest: a forest of tall trees, year round warmth and constant rain

  28. Rainforest

  29. Rainforest cover 6% of the earth but generate 40% of our oxygen.

  30. #9 Alpine: mountainous regions which are cold

  31. Alpine

  32. Areas of Alpine are cold because of elevation (above the tree line).

  33. #10 Coniferous Forest: forest which keep their leaves all year long.

  34. #11 Coral Reef: a ridge or mound made by colonies of tiny coral animals; found only in shallow regions of tropical oceans

  35. Coral Reef

  36. Ac-tivity, Ac-tivity • On your blank world map, color the 9 different biomes. • In the bottom left corner, create a(n) index/table of the biome’s color. • Then, explain in complete sentences for each biome: • What is the CLIMATE in this biome and how does it affect it? P. 70 • What would you wear and what would you do in your leisure time?

  37. Pre AP Enrichment • Create a journal entry of someone living in a specific biome. Describe the climate, how you dress, what job you would have, and how you would live. Do NOT include the name of the biome. Trade with a partner and let them guess the biome.
