  2. Sentence Types • There are four types of sentences. • They are classified based on the number of independent and dependent clauses that they contain.

  3. Simple Sentences • A simple sentence is a sentence with one independent clause and no dependent clauses. My grandmother bakes great cookies. I like to swim in the pool.

  4. Compound Sentences • A compound sentence contains two independent clauses and no dependent clauses. • Join two independent clauses together by using a comma and a conjunction or by using a semi-colon. The clown jumped out of the cake, and he scared the little children. The players entered the stadium; they were determined to win the game.

  5. Complex Sentences • A complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. After she sold all of her cookies, the girl counted her money. Although he likes all kinds of music, Charles prefers to listen to country music most of all.

  6. Compound-Complex Sentences • A compound-complex sentence has multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Although I enjoy playing basketball, I haven’t had time to play lately, and I don’t have anyone to play with.

  7. Practice • Label each sentence as either simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex. • We decided that the movie was boring, but our children, who like silly humor, found it very entertaining. • Although he had never played the game before, Brian proved to be our best player. • The puppy needed to go for a walk, but he wouldn’t come out from behind the couch.
