In this session, participants will • Find common statistics and understand why it is necessary to have several different measures of center and spread • Explain why the shape of a distribution is important for analysis • Choose the correct graph to complement a set of data • Explore unions, intersections and complements • Discover how tables, trees and formulas are related • Investigate the concept of independence and how it relates to conditional probability

  3. Given the data set… • What statistics can we find? Using our calculators, we can find mean, standard deviation (for samples or populations), sample size, minimum, Q1, med, Q3, maximum • What common statistics are not given? Mode, variance, range and inter-quartile range

  4. Why do we need 2 measures of center? The measure of center tells us the measure of what we will consider average. How did the average student score? How tall is the average banana tree? How heavy is the average SUV? Where do we find this measure?

  5. Why do we need several measures of spread? • Range – distance from beginning to end of the data set (maximum – minimum) • Standard deviation – an average of the deviations from the mean (approximately 70% of the data lies within 1 standard deviation of the mean) • Inter-quartile range – spread of the middle 50% of the data (Q3 – Q1)
