Student Funding Opportunities: How Can You Help Them Find Support? Prepared by Rhea L. Williamson, Ph.D. Dean of Research Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
Mission statement: HSU • offer access to affordable, high-quality education that is responsive to the needs of a fast-changing world. • provide a wide array of programs and activities that promote understanding of social, economic and environmental issues • prepare responsible members of diverse societies • serve as a catalyst for life-long learning and personal development • create an inclusive environment of free inquiry, in which learning is the highest priority
Research Mission • In collaboration with nearby industries and communities, HSU faculty and staff are dedicated to achieving the university's mission: To enrich the lives of its students, to transmit knowledge to its students along with the necessary skills for applying it in the service of our society, and to expand the base of knowledge through research and scholarship. • At HSU, we believe that discovery through research, creative endeavors and experience energizes the educational process.
Sources of Student Funding • Campus-wide • Department • Private industry • Alumni • Government
Basis for Funding • Awards are generally based on scholasticachievement and financial need. All students are encouraged to apply for as many scholarships as possible, to lessen their need for loans or part time work to attend school. • Some awards are based on Distinct Qualifications: qualities like leadership, community service, hardship, and academic achievement in addition to financial need.
FAFSA for Federal Funds • In order to receive student financial aid, students need to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every school year. • The process is all done on-line
Student Funding Opportunities CSU Doctoral Incentive Program Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholar Program Graduate Equity Fellowship CSU Research Competition Bertha Kalm Scholarship Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship McNair Scholarship Student Research Assistance
CSU Doctoral Incentive Program • Lends participants who are full-time doctoral students up to $10,000 annually to a limit of $30,000 over a five-year period. The recipients may enroll in any approved doctoral program, at an accredited university in the United States or abroad. • After completion of the doctoral degree, a DIP participant is extended a 12-month grace period before loan repayments begin. If the participant obtains a full-time instructional faculty position in the CSU, the loan principal and interest are "forgiven" at the rate of 20% for each year of service. After five years of full time faculty service, the entire loan amount can be forgiven.

What is Missing? • Prior opportunities are wonderful, but require advanced knowledge of need, considerable amounts of paperwork, and a long lag period • Faculty often have excellent students, who would benefit from giving a presentation at a conference, local or national • Development of a mechanism for funding by students for students that sets criteria, includes evaluation, and is promoted by the faculty would fill a void and promote advanced learning • ONE STOP SHOP LOCATION FOR DISCOVERY
How Can ASI Help? Examples • Support Instructionally Related Activities (as at CSU Fresno) • Provide ASI Supported Scholarships (as at CSU Long Beach) • Initiate a theme-based program that accomplishes our mission (e.g., community service, sustainability), and is supported by ASI funds (as at CSU Chico with the AS Sustainability Fund)
In Conclusion….. • We are in this together, working towards the same goals. • Helping students find ways to graduate smarter, easier, and sooner helps us, our students, and our community. THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING
