Applied Research • Provides 1:1 match for any research with commercial potential • Two funding cycles per year • Proof-of-concept funding: Maximum $45,000 each year for 1-2 years • Accelerated funding: up to $300,000 for one to three years • 53 percent award rate • Solicitation Online: March 1st, 2013 • Application Deadline: April 10th, 2013

  3. Plant Science • Provides both matched and non-matched funds for plant science research • Basic Research provides non-matched funds up to $50,000 per year for one or two years • Applied Research must have commercialization potential and requires 1:1 match • Proof-of-Concept provides up to $50,000 per year for one or two years • Accelerated provides up to $100,000 per year for one or two years • 32 percent award rate • Solicitation Online: October 1st, 2012 • Application Deadline: November 28th, 2012

  4. Health Research • Provides funding for basic research related to human health • No match required • Maximum of $45,000 per year for up to three years • 26 percent award rate • Solicitation Online: February 1st, 2013 • Application Deadline: March 6th, 2013

  5. Intern • Provides 1:1 match for undergraduate student or faculty member intern experiences in industry settings • Business must be involved • Student experiences can be in a variety of areas • Manufacturing • Applied research • High-tech business support services • $30,000 per year for one or two years • 85 percent award rate • Solicitation Online: September 7th, 2012 • Application Deadline: November 14th, 2012

SBIR & STTR Overview Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) • 11 Federal agencies that award ~$2.5B • Two types of projects: • Development of new technology • New applications for existing technology Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) • 5 Federal agencies that award ~ $261.4M • Small businesses identify a federal lab or university technology and use the STTR program to transfer and commercialize it

Benefits of SBIR/STTR • Company retains ownership of all IP • Grants/contracts are a non-dilutive source of project funding – not a loan, no repayment • Funding for risky endeavors • Provides third party technology validation • Attracts follow-on investment and commercialization partners • May lead to publication

  14. SBIR Eligibility • Small business with ≤ 500 employees • Must be a for profit entity • PI must be principally employed by the business • 51% owned and controlled by U.S. citizens • Subcontractor participation up to 33% Requirements/qualifications may differ between agencies

STTR Eligibility • Only small, for-profit business can participate • PI may be fully employed by the research institution • 40% of the work must be done within the business • Subcontractor participation up to 60% • IP ownership can reside with either the business or research institution Requirements/qualifications may differ between agencies
