  2. Call to Worship Great and wonderful are the things the Lord our God has done for us. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

  3. Singing the Faith 214 Once in Royal David’s City

  4. Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

  5. He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; with the needy, poor and lowly lived on earth our Saviour holy.

  6. And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love, for that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heaven above; and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone.

  7. Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, we shall see him; but in heaven, set at God's right hand on high; there his children gather round bright like stars, with glory crowned. Cecil Frances Alexander (1818 - 1895)

  9. We say together: Loving God, you have searched us and known us, our blindness, our frailties, our fears and our selfishness. In sorrow what we confess that we have sinned against you and disobeyed your command to love.

  10. Forgive us, for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, who became like us that we might become like him. Amen.

  11. The true light that gives light to everyone has come into the world. To all who receive him, he gives power to become children of God. This is Christ’s gracious word: Your sins are forgiven. Amen thanks be to God.

  12. Old Testament Reading Isaiah 9: 2 - 7

Isaiah 9: 2 – 7 2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. They lived in a land of shadows, but now light is shining on them. 3 You have given them great joy, LORD; you have made them happy. They rejoice in what you have done, as people rejoice when they harvest their corn or when they divide captured wealth. 

  14. Isaiah 9: 2 – 7 4 For you have broken the yoke that burdened them and the rod that beat their shoulders. You have defeated the nation that oppressed and exploited your people, just as you defeated the army of Midian long ago. 

  15. Isaiah 9: 2 – 7 5 The boots of the invading army and all their bloodstained clothing will be destroyed by fire. 6 A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler. He will be called, “Wonderful Counsellor”, “Mighty God”, “Eternal Father”, “Prince of Peace”. 

  16. Isaiah 9: 2 – 7 7 His royal power will continue to grow; his kingdom will always be at peace. He will rule as King David's successor,basing his power on right and justice, from now until the end of time. The LORD Almighty is determined to do all this.

  18. While shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground, the angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around.

  19. 'Fear not,' said he (for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind), 'glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and humankind.

  20. 'To you in David's town this day is born of David's line a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; and this shall be the sign:

  21. 'The heavenly babe you there shall find to human view displayed, all meanly wrapped in swaddling bands, and in a manger laid.'

  22. Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith appeared a shining throng of angels praising God, and thus addressed their joyful song: All glory be to God on high, and to the world be peace; goodwill henceforth from heaven to earth begin and never cease.'   Nahum Tate (1652-1715)

  24. Luke 2: 1 – 20 1 At that time the Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire.2 When this first census took place, Quirinius was the governor of Syria.3 Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own town.

  25. Luke 2: 1 – 20 4 Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David. Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David.5 He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him. She was pregnant,

  26. Luke 2: 1 – 20 6 and while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby.7 She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger — there was no room for them to stay in the inn.

  27. Luke 2: 1 – 20 8 There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks.9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid,

  28. Luke 2: 1 – 20 10 but the angel said to them, “Don't be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people.11 This very day in David's town your Saviour was born — Christ the Lord!

Luke 2: 1 – 20 12 And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger.”13 Suddenly a great army of heaven's angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God:14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!”

  30. Luke 2: 1 – 20 15 When the angels went away from them back into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us.”16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying in the manger.17

  31. Luke 2: 1 – 20 When the shepherds saw him, they told them what the angel had said about the child.18 All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said.19 Mary remembered all these things and thought deeply about them.

  32. Luke 2: 1 – 20 20 The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told them.

  35. Let us pray Unlooked for, Christ comes. To shepherds, watching their sheep through the long, dark night, he comes with the glory of the angels’ song and in the humility of the manger. Silence

  36. Loving God, we pray for our community In the midst of our everyday lives, surprise us with glimpses of the glorious, humble love at the heart of existence. Lord, come to your people. In your mercy set us free.

  37. Searched for, Christ comes. To the wise of and powerful, Star led to Bethlehem, seeking a king, he comes, Child of Mary, crowned with meekness, worthy of every gift. Silence

  38. Loving God, we pray for the leaders of the world … Guide them with your light to the true wisdom of justice and peace, of freedom and respect for every human life. Lord, come to your people. In your mercy set us free.

  39. Longed for, Christ comes. To Anna and Simeon, whose days are lived in faithful expectation, he comes, and new life to the old, a living prophecy of hope. Silence

  40. Loving God, we pray for the Church in all the world … Unite us by your Spirit, and make us faithful witnesses to the hope we have in you. Lord come to your people. In your mercy set us free.

  41. Prayed for, Christ comes. To men and women, girls and boys, crying out in darkness, pain and loneliness, He comes, baptised, at one with us, our Saviour, healer and friend. Silence

  42. Loving God, we pray for those whose lives are hard and painful or whose existence is sorrowful, bitter or empty …

  43. In their need may they know your healing touch, reaching out to comfort, strengthen and restore. Lord come to your people. In your mercy set us free.

  44. Unlooked for and searched for, longed for and prayed for, loving God, you come to us now, as you have come to your people in every age.

  45. We thank you for all who have reflected the light of Christ. Help us to follow their example and bring us with them to eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
