THINK-ALOUD. First. I’m going to think aloud as I read. I want to help you understand how I read word problems. I want to show you that I get confused too, so I will let you know when something is confusing, when I would write things down and what comes to mind as I read.

  2. First • I’m going to think aloud as I read. I want to help you understand how I read word problems. I want to show you that I get confused too, so I will let you know when something is confusing, when I would write things down and what comes to mind as I read. • The black text is the reading and the blue text represents my thoughts.

  3. In the Deep End • “Sydney and Julia were going to start their first summer jobs as lifeguards at the neighborhood pool in a few weeks. For now, their job was to help get the pool ready. All the employees had spent several days cleaning up the pool house and deck, and now they were getting the pool ready to be filled with water. Over the winter, a large pile of leaves had accumulated at the bottom of the pool…”

  4. So far we have only read a story. There were no numbers or anything specified that can be calculated.   7. Was 50 times for us,” Victoria said. “Julia and I filled ours 20 times,” Sydney said. “Well, then its obvious who carried out more leaves, isn’t it?” Destiny said” (Yoder, & Yoder, 2010) • So we must figure out who carried out the most leaves with the information we have written down.

  8. Think it Through • How many cubic feet is Victoria and Destiny’s box? • There box is a 2 ft box, so recall the formula of cubic feet: • Length x Width x Height = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 cubic feet • So, how many cubic feet is Julia and Sydney’s box? • There box is 3 ft, so • 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 cubic feet

  9. So Who Moved More Leaves? • Both pairs of girls filled there box completely to the top, so • Destiny and Victoria moved 8 cubic feet 50 times • So 8 x 50 = 400 • Sydney and Julia moved 27 cubic feet 20 times • 27 x 20 = 540 • Sydney and Julia moved the most leaves
