  2. History • Michigan has around 150 lighthouses, the most of any U.S state. • Come visit the Grand Traverse Lighthouse located inside Leelanau State park in northern Michigan, It was built in 1856.

  3. Economy • Michigan’s February 2011 unemployment rate dropped to 8.8 percent • 13.5 million new vehicles were purchased in December 2011 • Michigan added 62,000 jobs since February 2011

  4. Geography • The Erie Canal is a major water transportation network on the Great Lakes • 56,809 square miles of Michigan are land areas • The highest point in Michigan is Mount Arvon at 1,979 feet above sea level.

  5. Education • As of fall 2000, there were 635,836 students in college or gradate school. • The total enrollment for fall 1999 in Michigan’s public schools stood 1,725,617

  6. Interesting Facts • First soda pop made in the U.S was Vernor’s ginger ale was created by accident in 1866 in Detroit. • Michigan has the most registered boats over 1 million. • 11th largest state in the U.S and 26th state to become apart of the U.S
