  1. Multiple Indicator Cluster SurveysSurvey Design Workshop Training of the Field Staff MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  2. Objectives • Administrative and Logistic Aspects of Training • Content of Training • Training Techniques • Preparation for Field Work MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  3. Size of Training Class • The smaller the better • Train more field staff than needed (one fifth more) • Include data processing personnel (at least the supervisors) • Other considerations: • Central vs. Regional • Language • Venue Beware of holding different trainings in different sites – difficult to standardize! MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  4. Trainers • Training should be provided by senior survey staff who know the questionnaire • Enough trainers needed for practice, group work and observation • Guest lecturers in relevant fields for MICS4: Education, Maternal and Child Health, Child Protection, HIV/AIDS, etc. • Include technical committee • Professional in anthropometry MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  5. Training Duration • Approximately 2 weeks for pre-test and 3 weeks for main survey • Pre-test training may be “training of trainers” • When anthropometry is included at least two days will need to be added • Supervisors and editors need at least additional 2 days • No more than 8 hours per day MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  6. Materials for Training • White board; flip charts; projector; pens; markers • Sufficient printed questionnaires and manuals • Final translated questionnaire (after pretest) • Enough copies for practice and for pilot test • Sample maps and household listing forms • Control sheets (supervisors and editors) • Vaccination cards for practice (can be duplicated) • ORS packages, Vitamin A capsules, Salt test kits, contraceptives, bednets • Equipment (measuring board, scales, GPS) MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  7. Content of Training Course • Example in MICS4 Manual • Day 1: Objectives and survey instruments • Day 2-11: Survey procedures and questionnaires • Day 12-14: Pilot test (field exercise) with de-briefings • Supervisor and editor training, additions • Household selection and map reading • Quality control • Practice • Anthropometry training MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  8. Content of Training Course • Setting the agenda for interviewer training • Time to go over all questionnaires • Some modules require more time than others • Mix of presentation and practice • Schedule practices later in the day • Homework assignments (readings, practice interview) • Role of supervisors during interviewer training • Assist during practices in classroom and in the field • Involved in editing questionnaires MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  9. Practice! • Role playing on approaching the household, handling refusals • Role playing on interview techniques, getting privacy • Front-of-class interview with real respondent • Using vaccination cards • Salt testing • Anthropometry • Sampling points on the questionnaire, pictures etc. MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  10. Pilot Study • Rehearsal for fieldwork • Tests procedures • Practice for interviewers, supervisors, editors • Allows trainers to see field staff in action • Do use rural and urban samples • Don’t use MICS sample clusters • Don’t use pilot study data for final sample MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  11. Good practices to build morale • Invite a high official to open and close the training course • Invite technical committee to give background talks on module topics, talk about how the data is used • Use participatory techniques: • Encourage trainees to ask questions • Ask candidates questions • Ask trainees to read aloud • Avoid pointing out individual trainee’s errors • Emphasise cooperation, teamwork • Be willing to accept criticism – get feedback • Issue certificates of course completion, print T-shirts. MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  12. Evaluation and testing of trainees • Observational and Written tests • One after the questionnaires are introduced; one towards the end of training • Quizzes • Observation throughout • Objectives of the evaluation • Identify general difficulties • Identify elements of the instruments requiring revision • Politeness, rapport • Establish basis for decision-making (judgment) MICS4 Survey Design Workshop
