Background • The mortality risks for both mother and newborn are highest during the first couple of days after birth. • Requests from within UNICEF as well as the from wider international development community for standardized data on post-natal care contacts for mother and baby. • This module was developed by the global MICS programme in collaboration with other development partners. Overview of module • Measures contact with a provider not content of care. • Focus of data collection on PNC visit: • In the case of facility deliveries contact occurring after discharge. • In the case of home deliveries, the focus will be on any contact with a care provider after the TBA/birth attendant leaves the home. Note that structure of module allows for addition of questions on content, if desired. MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

  4. Eligibility • Women of reproductive age (15-49 years) • Live birth in the two years preceding interview MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

MICS Indicators PN.1 Post-partum stay in health facility Numerator: Number of women age 15-49 years who stayed in the health facility for 12 hours or more after the delivery of their last live birth in the 2 years preceding the survey Denominator:Total number of women age 15-49 years with a live birth in the 2 years preceding the survey MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

MICS Indicators PN.2 Post-natal health check for the newborn Numerator: Number of last live births in the last 2 years who received a post-natal health check from any provider within 2 days after birth Denominator: Total number of last live births in the last 2 years MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

Methodological issues • New module and not a lot of experience yet. • Module will require careful training and practice due to lots of skip patterns. • This new approach should allow for more precise measurement of PNC visits (versus intrapartum or immediate postnatal care).
