Background • Tobacco: known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, lung and other cancers • Alcohol abuse is a serious problem in many countries. Associated with: • increased risk of accidents, cirrhosis, hypertension, psychological illnesses, and congenital malformations. Aggravates risk of family problems MICS4 Survey Design Workshop

Background • Any intensity of tobacco use is considered a (potential) health problem • Intensity is directly correlated with poor health outcomes • Early initiation increases length of exposure MICS4 Survey Design Workshop
MICS Indicators # TA1 - Tobacco use Percentage of women/men age 15-49 years who smoked cigarettes, or used smoked or smokeless tobacco products on one or more days during the last one month # TA2 - Smoking before age 15 Percentage of women/men age 15-49 years who smoked a whole cigarette before age 15 MICS4 Survey Design Workshop
MICS Indicators # TA3 - Alcohol use Number of women/men age 15-49 years who had at least one alcoholic drink on one or more days during the last one month # TA4 - Use of alcohol before age 15 Percentage of women age 15-49 years who had at least one alcoholic drink before age 15 MICS4 Survey Design Workshop
Methodological issues • Reference period for which questions are asked • Specific versus overall questions, open–ended versus categorical responses, and measurement of standard versus actual drink sizes or cigarette packages MICS4 Survey Design Workshop
