  2. Indicators • Prevalence of FGM/C among women aged 15-49 • Prevalence of extreme form of FGM/C • Approval for FGM/C • Prevalence of FGM/C among daughters

Goals • World Fit for Children (WFFC) • Protect children against abuse, exploitation and violence and under general protection to: • End harmful traditional or customary practices, such as early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation, which violates the rights of children and women • Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) • The MD declaration calls for the protection of children against abuse, exploitation and violence but no goal, target or indicator is included

  4. Questionnaire • Three sets of questions: • 1) Questions for women 15-49 years of age: • Knowledge of the practice (FG1, FG2) • If FGM/C has happened to her (FG3) • Type of procedure: if flesh was removed, nicked without removing flesh, sewn closed (FG4, FG5, FG6) • Performer: traditional performer, health personnel (FG7) • 2) Questions for FGM/C of daughters: • Numbers of daughters circumcised (FG9) • Last daughter circumcised (FG10) • Type of procedure (FG11, FG12, FG13) • Age of circumcision (FG 14) • Performer: traditional performer, health personnel (FG15) • 3) Attitudes regarding the continuation of the practice (FG16)

  5. Prevalence among women 15-49 • Numerator: • Number of women aged 15-49 reporting they had any form of genital mutilation/cutting • Denominator: • Total number of women aged 15-49 surveyed

  6. Prevalence of extreme formof FGM/C • Numerator: • Number of women aged 15-49 reporting they had an extreme form of genital mutilation/cutting (infibulation) • Denominator: • Total number of women aged 15-49 surveyed

  7. Approval for FGM/C • Numerator: • Number of women aged 15-49 favoring the continuation of female genital mutilation/cutting • Denominator: • Total number of women aged 15-49 surveyed

  8. SPSS Program • Generates basic table: CP 7 • Generates: • Percentage of women who have had any form of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) • Percentage who have had different types of FGM/C • Percentage who have had the extreme form of FGM/C (infibulation) • Percent distribution of attitudes towards whether the practice of FGM/C should be continued

  9. Prevalence among daughters • Numerator: • Number of women aged 15-49 reporting that at least one daughter who had female genital mutilation/cutting • Denominator: • Total number of women aged 15-49 surveyed who have at least one living daughter

  10. SPSS Program • Generates basic table: CP 8 • Generates: • Percentage of women with at least one living daughter who has had female genital mutilation/cutting • Percentage of daughters by type of FGM/C • Percentage of daughters who have had the extreme form of FGM/C (infibulation)

  11. Methodological issues • Extreme form of FGM/C (infibulation) is defined as both the removal of flesh from the genital area and sewing closed the genital area • The column “not determined” is for those women who respond that they/their daughters had been circumcised, but then do not respond 'yes' to any of the three following questions concerning the type of FGM
