What is SRE? SRE is the life long learning about physical, moral and emotional development. It is the understanding of the importance of marriage for family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care. It is also about the teaching of sex, sexuality and sexual health.
Sex and Relationship Education • SRE forms a part of the whole PSHE Programme • There is a lot of overlap between the different areas • The key message is the well-being of the child • Parents have the right to withdraw their child from elements of SRE
Partnership • Important to remember that parents are the first educators of the child. • Partnership is essential and our role as a school is to support you not replace you. • Other key player is the Church Church School Home
A Journey in LOVE The central message of the Christian faith is love. “My commandment is this: love one another, just as I love you.” John 15:12
A Journey in LOVE • The journey begins right from the moment of our conception God is at the heart of love • Puberty can be a very confusing time, but even in the confusion, God is there. • The Sacrament of Marriage declares the commitment of each spouse to the other permanently in the acknowledgement that it is God-given.
Reception Children know and understand that God has made them unique and that although we are all different we are all special to him.
Examples of Reception Activities • A graph of eye colours • Why was I given my name? • Who are my friends • I grew for 9 months in my mummy’s tummy Jesus grew for 9 months in Mary’s womb
Year One Children know and understand that they are growing and developing as members of their own family and God’s family.
Examples of Year One Activities • Draw a picture of my family • How old was I when I learned to crawl, speak etc. • How can I help at home? • We are members of God’s family
Year Two Children know and understand that they are growing and developing in a God-given community.
Examples of Year Two Activities • What is community? • Explore school as community • How can we contribute to the community? • As children of God how should we help each other?
Year Three Children know and understand the virtues essential to friendship e.g. loyalty, responsibility… and experience the importance both of forgiving and being forgiven and of celebrating God’s forgiveness.
Examples of Year Three Activities • Who cares for me at home, school, parish, community? • How do you keep safe? • How do you take care of others? • How do you feel if a friend is not there for you or you are not there for them? • How can I forgive and include others as Jesus did?
Year Four Children know and understand that they are all different and celebrate these differences as they appreciate that God’s love accepts us as we are and as we change.
Examples of Year Four Activities • Recognise all pupils grow and develop at a different rate • Name male and female body parts • Identify the development of the baby in the womb • How do I appreciate my own and others gifts, talents, achievements and all that makes us unique • St. Paul’s teaching on love

Year 5Individual • What children will learn: • that they are made in the image of God • That physical and emotional growth is common to all of us and a normal part of becoming an adult • To accept and respect themselves
Year 5Physical • What children will learn: • That the difference between boys and girls is part of God’s creative and loving work • Vocabulary to describe menstruation • To celebrate the differences between boys and girls This will be built on in Y6 when male maturation will be treated in more depth
Year 5Social • What they will learn: • What the Church teaches in relation to personal responsibility and dignity of the person • To take responsibility for their personal hygiene • How to manage socially awkward situations
Year 5Emotional • What they will learn: • How the church recognises the importance of our emotions and how they can shape our actions • To identify a wide range of feelings in themselves and others • To take responsibility and manage feelings appropriately • An awareness of the responsibility we have for each other
Year 5Spiritual • What they will learn: • That our spiritual relationship with God links together and transforms all aspects of our person • The basics of authentic friendship with others and God • When they do and do not feel comfortable with themselves • To identify when confidentiality is and is not appropriate

Year sixYour changing bodies- boys • What they will learn: • To have knowledge and understanding of male physical development
Year sixPersonal behaviour • What they will learn: • To have self confidence and skills • To translate these into personal behaviour in a range of situations such as making new friends
Journey of love For each of us, life is like a journey. Birth is the beginning of this journey, And death is not the end; but the destination. It is a journey that takes us From youth to age, From innocence to awareness From ignorance to knowledge From foolishness to wisdom From weakness to strength and often back again From offence to forgiveness From pain to compassion, From fear to faith, From defeat to victory and from victory to defeat, Until, looking backward or ahead, We see that victory does not lie At some high point along the way, But in having made the journey, Stage by stage Adapted from an old Hebrew Prayer
