Why should housing providers support customers with training & employment • 3 million people are unemployed • 3.9 million households where no adults work • Youth unemployment 900,00 • Approx one third of all workless households live in social housing • 70% of social tenants have incomes within the poorest two fifths • Workless households are often concentrated in areas of social housing where worklessness and poverty are part of a cycle

  4. Social Enterprise What are they? •  "businesses with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners."

Preparing People for Employment • Basic & Employability skills – classroom, on line testing, one to one coaching • Team work – paint balling, excursions • Citizenship – behaviours, equality & diversity, drugs awareness, bullying, homelessness • Work Experience- workshops, with employers • We listen – young peoples problems, taking time out, support & guidance

  12. Homeworks – Commercial Arm Gardening Project - provides practical experience for young learners and apprentices 30 teams - complete work for Stoke on Trent City Council, Aspire Housing, other RSLs

Housing providers lead the way through Social Enterprise • Knowsley and District Housing – Investing in local social enterprises – tackling youth unemployment • Catalyst Housing Group- recognised Open College network training provider – creates jobs for tenants • Chevin Housing – Employment initiatives – helped 150 young people into work or training, offers free driving lessons

  18. Coast & Country Housing • Assisting long term unemployed tenants back to work • 3 community development teams • Provision of outreach support – visit tenants in their homes and develop tailored packages of support • 717 referrals received and 12% have secured employment
