  1. Building Self-Esteem How Can We Do It?

  2. Accept Yourself • Remember you don’t have to be like everyone else • If we were all alike we would be boring • You will never be able to please everyone • Normal means being up sometimes and down sometimes • Normal means being good at some things and not good at others

  3. Forgive Yourself • Everyone makes mistakes • Everyone has to take criticism THIS SIMPLY MEANS YOU ARE NOT PERFECT AND WHO IS?

  4. Learn a New Skill • Find something you like to do and do it • Be realistic—not everyone can be a star basketball player! • Share your skill with someone • Remember self-esteem grows when you accomplish things and even more when others recognize what you can do!

  5. Reach Out to Others • Helping others gives assistance where needed while building your self-esteem • When you do, others will respond • Help someone in your family • Volunteer in the neighborhood • Visit in a home for the elderly • Show a child how to do something

  6. Be Positive • Practice making positive choices • Decide to trust rather than worry • Like instead of dislike • Laugh rather than cry • Compliment rather than criticize • When things get tough, try one more time • Give more than you take • Participate –not watch • Be a plus not a minus

  7. Be Assertive • No one is a doormat • Everyone has an opinion • Assertiveness means speaking up for yourself without offending others! • Be comfortable with saying what you think or feel, don’t hide it! • When you see a problem, work to correct it • If you need to say “no” say it with confidence
