Dos • Maximum time: 1.5 min to 2 min • Spend 5 min on drafting the notes and another 5 min on practising • Well organized ideas written on the note cards • Smart and casual • Criteria: • accurate pronunciation • Loud voice projection • Systematic organization of ideas • Enough input of ideas for subsequent discussion

  3. Don’ts • Exceed the two minutes’ limit • Soft, mumbled voice • Add in personal examples • Write lengthy sentences on the note card • Read from the note card

  4. Greeting • Wear a smile • Be polite and look at the audience (not the examiners) • Mind your body language: try to show you are enjoying your presentation • Take a deep breath and start: • Good afternoon everybody

  5. Introduction • Study the title, the first paragraph and last paragraph • Take out adjectives in the last paragraph • Form rhetorical question • Quote the present scenario • State the heading of the passage

Example • Rhetorical question • Have you ever felt upset or annoyed by the sensational news reports and indecent pictures in the mass media? • Present scenario • Nowadays it seems that there is an obvious deterioration in the quality of news and apparently it has a strong negative impact on us already. • State the heading of the passage • I have just read an article, entitled “Moral standards in the press” which may offer us some insight towards the issue.

Linking words (1) • Problem: • First, let’s look into the problem in greater details before we could come up with any suggestions to solve the case. • I am sure all of you would have been aware that … • It is obvious that we are now facing a grave problem. • “Apparently a lot of people are complaining that news reporters are no longer as professional as they used to use. It is not uncommon to see exaggerated news emphasizing violence and sex. Besides, some even include offensive photographs.”

Linking words (2) • Reasons / effects/ consequences: • There are three reasons behind the problem. • I have identified three reasons to explain the situation. • Then we can have a look at the reasons. • “There are numerous negative impacts resulting from the problem. • First, • Then, • Finally,….”

Linking words (3) • Suggestions: • I am sure the government should … • It is about time for the government did something quick to fix the problem. • If the government could do this, that would happen. • Unless the government could do something quick, there would not be any change observed. • “I would suggest the media adopt stricter guidelines for reporters and their companies to protect the privacy of all individuals.”

  11. Ending • Have a glimpse at the clock or watch. If you have passed the 1.5 min limit, say the following: • That’s what I would like to share today. Thank you
