  2. Overview Goal of the lessons : To find the area of a square and rectangle. Pedagogical approach : Constructivism Skills/knowledge : • Identify rectangle and square in the classroom. • Relate the characteristics of different figures. • Understand the concept of area . • Derive the formula in finding the area of rectangle and square. • Find the area of a figure in square units. • Solve word problems. Kinds of technology tools: • 1 Laptop with internet connection • 1 LCD projection system • Power Point Presentation • You Tube • Individual and group activity sheets • Other manipulative objects such as Geo board and paper folding

  3. Objectives 1. Identify square and rectangle in the classroom. 2. Relate the characteristics of different figureswith the use of tangram. 3. Visualized and understand the concept of area. 4. Derive the formula in finding the area of square and rectangle. 5. Find the area of a figure in square units. 6. Solve word problems.

  5. Materials • Laptop with internet connection • LCD projection system • Power Point Presentation • You Tube • Individual and group activity sheets • Manipulative such as paper and tangram • Geo board

  6. Motivation This is a black board. What is the shape of a black board? Can you give me more example an a rectangle? (door, window, table etc.) This is a picture frame. What is the shape of a picture frame? Can you give me more example an a square? (frame, ceiling, chart, etc.)

  7. Motivation What have you noticed with a rectangle? - It has two pairs of equal sides What have you noticed with a square? - It has four equal sides Compare a rectangle and a square. - Rectangle has two pairs of equal sides while a square has four equal sides

  8. Presentation Solve the following using a geo board. 1. a. Make a 4 x 4 square in a geo board. b. Let the pupils count the number of square inside the square. (16 square units) • a. Make a 5 x 6 rectangle in a geo board. b. Let the pupils count the number of square inside a rectangle. Activity Constructing Your Own Set of Tangrams Materials : a rectangular piece of paper suitable for folding a pair of scissors a ruler (optional) Activities : A complete set of tangrams consists of seven pieces: a small squaretwo small congruent trianglestwo large congruent trianglesa medium-size trianglea parallelogram You can make your own set of tangrams from a single piece of paper.

  11. Activity Just follow these simple steps: 1. Fold a rectangular piece of paper 2. Cut the square into two triangles. so that a square is formed. Cut off the extra flap. 3. Take one triangle and fold it in half. Cut the triangle along the fold into two smaller triangles.

  12. Activity 4. Take the other triangle and 5. Fold the trapezoid in half and fold again. crease it in the middle. Cut along both folds. Fold the corner of the triangle opposite the crease and cut.

  13. Activity 6. Fold the remaining small trapezoid and cut it in two. Tangrams are a puzzle that help develop spatial-visualization skills, but they may also be used to introduce or reinforce geometrical concepts such as congruency, similarity, symmetry, and so forth. This unit for grades 4 through 6 uses tangrams to compute the area of polygons  without formulas. In the process of doing so, the terms congruent  and similar  are introduced.

  15. Group Activity Primary activities • The student can compute the area of any  polygon constructed from tangrams. Make a square with the medium-size triangle and the two small congruent triangles. What is the area of this square? How do you know? Sketch the square in your notebook and record its area. 2. Make a rectangle with the parallelogram and the two small congruent triangles. What is the area of this rectangle? How do you know? Sketch the rectangle in your notebook and record its area.
