An Exposition The Epistle to the Romans “Understanding Community” Romans 13:8 5-11-08
A Debt of Loving Romans 13:8-10 (NIV) Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. [9] The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet," and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself." [10] Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Strategic Knowing Romans 13:11-14 (NIV) And do this, understanding (knowing) the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. [12] The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. [13] Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. [14] Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
KnowingTHE WORD MEANS... To know; to understand; to perceive; to realize; to be very sure of this; to experience; to be acquainted with; to recognize; to acknowledge; to remember. Practical Application The believer is to understand the time. The word “knowing” (eidotes) means to make sure that you know; do not dare miss knowing. The term “present time” (ton kairon) means the critical period; the strategic or special period of time.
Knowing • This is in the line of all our Lord's teaching, which represents the decisive day of Christ's second appearing as at hand, to keep believers ever in the attitude of wakeful expectancy, but without reference to the chronological nearness or distance of that event. JFB Commentary
Empathic Attunement Romans 14:1-2 (NIV) Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. [2] One man's faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.
Unity for Christ’s Sake Romans 14:3-4 (NIV) The man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted him. [4] Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
Communal Attunement Romans 14:5 (NIV) One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. Attunemnent = to bring into harmonious and responsive relationship. Communal = that which is shared by people in community.
